Comparing the Audi A5 to the Audi S5-How Are They Similar, How Are They Different?

The latest versions of the Audi A5 and S5 are both new for 2018, and as such, they come bearing some new toys: updated engines, new features, and TEXT

Where They Differ:

  • Looking at them, you'd be forgiven for considering these coupes twins, but the main difference lurks beneath the sheet metal: powertrains. For the 2018 Audi A5 Coupe, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine beats in the chest, and it's rated at 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque-so it's no slouch! In the 2018 Audi S5 Coupe, the ante is raised by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, rated at 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
  • The Audi A5 has more exterior color options than the S5, but the S5 has interior design options that hint at its sporty pedigree that you won't find on the A5.
  • They also differ in terms of transmissions: the 2018 A5 starts with a 6-speed manual with the option of a 7-speed automatic, while the 2018 S5 gives you an 8-speed automatic only.
  • Because of their difference in powertrains, the Audi A5 is a bit more efficient than the Audi S5-but where else would the S5 get that much power?

Where They're Similar:

  • There's not much on the outside that sets these two apart, so when it comes to appearance, they're almost identical.
  • Both coupes offer Audi's Drive Select, which lets you chose how you'd like to drive by letting you customize the steering, shifting, and throttle components of your vehicle.
  • The proportions of these two coupes are almost identical, with the S5 sitting less than half an inch lower than the A5.
  • Audi's legendary quattro® all-wheel drive (AWD) system is standard on both!
  • Both coupes are riding on the same Audi MLB architecture that undergirds the 2017 Audi A4.

You Might Prefer the Audi A5 If…

  • …better fuel efficiency is more important to you than extra horsepower.
  • …you're interested in more exterior color options, but you're okay with missing out on some exclusive S5 choices.
  • …you prefer a manual transmission. The Audi A5 starts with a six-speed manual transmission with the option for a 7-speed automatic, but the 2018 S5 offers only an 8-speed automatic transmission, no manual to be seen.

You Might Prefer the Audi S5 If…

…more power and more torque appeal to you, and you don't mind sacrificing a bit of your fuel efficiency to have it!

  • …you want to drive a sports coupe that has features and appearance options to make it look like a sports coupe.
  • …you want a stiffer suspension for a more aggressive, rewarding on-road experience.
